Stay Safe in the Heat – Hot weather can affect how your body copes with drugs and alcohol, increasing the risk of harm to you.

Hot Weather Safety Tips:

  • Drink plenty of non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated fluids to stay hydrated throughout the day.
  • Avoid exertionlimit physical activity during peak heat hours.
  • Stay in shaded areas where possible – local parks, day centres and community hubs can offer a break from the heat.
  • Wear loose, lightweight clothing.
  • Use wet cloths on your forehead and neck when possible.
  • Check on friends or others who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illness, due to physical or mental health needs.
  • Be aware that heat can increase the effects of some substances and place additional strain on the body.
  • Avoid mixing substances, particularly alcohol and other depressants.  Opioids and stimulants can make it harder for your body to stay cool and so hot weather can increase the risk of dehydration, heat-stroke, and overdose.
  • Try not to use substances alone – use with a trusted other – or ensure someone knows where you are.
  • Carry naloxone with you and make sure people around you know how to use it.
  • Monitor for overheating: watch for warning signs like dizziness, nausea, confusion, or a rapid heart rate.
  • If you notice someone exhibiting severe signs of overheating (e.g., extreme heat, agitation, or confusion), call 999 immediately.

Naloxone saves lives – get it; carry it; use it.

Stay Safe This Summer.

Look after yourself. Look after each other.
