Introduction
As the World Cup football tournament kicks off, it’s a time for friends, families and communities across Devon to come together. However, big matches can bring heightened emotions, so it’s important that people look out for each other.
Devon County Council’s Public Health team has put together a range of simple messages to help people stay safe and highlight where support is available. This covers knowing your limits with alcohol (if you drink), understanding the risks around drugs, staying in control of smoking cravings and keeping gambling in check.
Incidents of domestic abuse can also rise during major tournaments, so it’s important we continue to look out for each other and know where to get support.
To help make this a World Cup remembered for the right reasons, we’d appreciate your support in reaching a wider audience and raising awareness of the risks associated with major tournaments, as well as where people can go for help.

The World Cup starts today – enjoy it safely ⚽🌍 From 11 June to 19 July, people across Devon will be coming together to celebrate with friends, family and communities ❤️ For most of us, it’s all about enjoying the moment safely. But big wins, tough losses and last-minute goals can sometimes lead to snap decisions – from extra drinks to unplanned bets. A few small choices can make a big difference 👇 ✅ Stay in control Know your limits, plan ahead if you are going to drink alcohol, and always avoid mixing alcohol with drugs (prescription and non-prescription). If you plan to gamble, set a budget before the game and stick to it. ✅ Get home safely Plan your journey in advance – never drink or drug drive. ✅ Look out for others Check in on your mates and people who appear in need, walk away from conflict, and be respectful. Big sporting events can raise tensions at home, and incidents of domestic abuse often increase. There’s never an excuse for abuse. Reach out if you’re worried about someone. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and act. Make it a World Cup to remember – for the right reasons ⚽ 👉 Devon Public Health has put together simple tips to enjoy the World Cup safely, plus support if you need it: devon.cc/enjoy-the-game |
